The city of Pittsburgh has some of the most challenging residential roofing in Western PA — and we love working on it. From the brick row houses of Lawrenceville and the South Side to the century-old Tudors of Squirrel Hill and the steep slope houses of Mt. Washington, every Pittsburgh neighborhood has its own roofing personality.

Kinnee Brothers Roofing is family-owned and based in Canonsburg, just south of the city. We work across all of Pittsburgh's residential neighborhoods — Bloomfield, Lawrenceville, Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, the North Side, the South Side, Brookline, Beechview, Banksville, and out to the East End. If your roof is in the city, we work on it.

Pittsburgh's residential housing was largely built between 1890 and 1940. Brick row houses in Lawrenceville, the South Side, the Strip District, and parts of the North Side have steep gable roofs, small footprints, and original sheathing usually plank rather than plywood. The biggest issue on these houses is flashing at the party walls between rowhomes — water gets in at the joint between two roofs and runs down between the walls. We do a lot of step flashing rework on Pittsburgh rowhomes.

Tudor and Colonial homes in Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Highland Park, Point Breeze, and Mt. Lebanon-adjacent neighborhoods often have complex rooflines with multiple gables, dormers, and original slate or tile that's now near end-of-life. We replace a lot of original slate roofs with high-end architectural asphalt designer shingles (GAF Camelot II is the popular slate-look option) that give the same visual character at a fraction of the maintenance cost.

Slope houses on Mt. Washington, the North Side bluffs, and the Hill District are often three-story homes built into hillsides with steep, complex roof structures. Access alone is a challenge — we sometimes need scaffolding to safely work these roofs, which adds to project cost. Working a roof where the next building is two feet away means tarping and debris control matters more. We do not damage neighboring properties.

City Pittsburgh roofs deal with the same Western PA weather menu as the suburbs — ice damming, freeze-thaw, summer storms, hail — plus city-specific challenges: tighter access and material staging, adjacent property considerations, and snow load on flat or low-slope back ell roofs that hold snow longer than steeper sections.

Roofing FAQs for Pittsburgh, PA

Do you work on rowhomes and historic Pittsburgh homes?

Yes. A lot of our city work is older homes with party walls, original slate, or complex flashing situations. We're comfortable with both modern construction and pre-1940 housing.

What does a Pittsburgh city roof replacement cost?

Most city replacements run $9,000-$15,000 for typical row homes and smaller residences. Larger Squirrel Hill or Shadyside homes with complex rooflines run $14,000-$25,000+. Complex slope homes or original slate replacements can run higher still.

Can you replace a slate roof with asphalt?

Yes, and we do it often. GAF designer shingles (Camelot II for slate-look, Grand Sequoia for cedar-look) match the visual character of slate or shake at a fraction of the maintenance burden and material cost. The original look is preserved without the recurring slate-replacement headache.

Do you handle city permits?

Yes. The City of Pittsburgh requires permits for residential roofing work above certain thresholds. We pull the permits, schedule inspections, and handle the paperwork.
